Hortense (Genny) Hodges Obituary
Hodges, Hortense (Genny) (nee Genung) 87, of Webster Groves, at home with her family at her side. Her long battle with liver disease ended at 3:50 p.m. on Sept 9. Her final months were spent in the tender care of BJC Hospice. Services: There will be a brief interment ceremony at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 25, in the memory garden at Webster Groves Presbyterian, Webster Groves, Dr. Blythe Kieffer officiating. Friends are encouraged to attend. Mrs. Hodges was born Nov. 16, 1925, in Springfield, Missouri, to Orion Taylor and Bernice Amelia (Parsons) Genung. She married Dr. Fred Jenner Hodges III on July 7, 1951, in St. Andrew's Episcopal, Ann Arbor, Michigan. She attended Drury College, Springfield from 1943 to 1945 and received her R.N. from St. John's Hospital School of Nursing, Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1948 while completing her B.S. at the University of Tulsa the following year. She accepted a nursing position at the University of Michigan in 1949 and survived a near fatal auto accident in 1950 when, it is believed, she acquired the virus that ultimately took her life. She retired assistant head nurse in 1952 to raise a family. Survived by two sons, Fred Jenner IV and Thomas Genung, both of Minneapolis, Minnesota, a sister Sarah Lou (Johnson) of Rochester, New York, one grandson and three great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband and a brother, Orion Taylor Jr. In lieu of flowers gifts may be sent to Webster Presbyterian Church's memory garden, 45 West Lockwood, Webster Groves, MO 63119.
