Smith, John Edward January 30, 1922 - March 24, 2014, was born in Topeka, Kansas to Louis Rollin Smith and Hazel Audrey Jones Smith and raised in Chapman, Kansas. He died quietly at Laclede Groves, Webster Groves, Missouri. He was predeceased by Yvonne Levesque Smith, his wife of 60 years, and his brother, Robert Barr Smith. John is survived by a brother and sister, two sister-in-laws, 4 children: Louis Rollin (Pamela Hite) Smith II of St. Louis, MO, Caroline Smith (Robert) Megli of Chico, CA, Linda Elaine Smith (Scott) Schaefer of Hudson, OH, and Daniel John (Patty Macdonnell) Smith of Shrewsbury, MO; numerous nieces and nephews, 12 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren. John graduated from Yale University and served in the Infantry in WWII and Korea, receiving 2 Purple Hearts. John and Yvonne raised their children in Simsbury, Connecticut, St. Paul, Minnesota and Webster Groves, Missouri. He worked as an actuary during his long career and will be remembered by his children for his constant devotion to his wife and family and longtime interests in pension reform, civil rights, and national healthcare. He was a member of Eliot Chapel, Kirkwood, MO, and the Ethical Society, Clayton, Missouri. Services: A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m., May 4, 2014, at Eliot Chapel, Kirkwood, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the St. Louis
or the Webster Groves Public Library. John's final resting places will be at Memorial Grove, Tyson Research Center, Eureka, MO, and at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, MO.
