Wiggins, John Robert 1936-2013. Town & Country, MO. John Robert Wiggins passed with his family at his side on March 5, 2013 after a brief, brave battle with cancer. John was born in Berwyn, Illinois on October 4, 1936 to John Booth Wiggins and Bess Barbara (Kirch) Wiggins. He followed in his father's footsteps and earned his degree in mechanical engineering from University of Minnesota in 1959. His career as an engineer started at Western Electric (later AT&T) in Chicago. He later moved with the company to Atlanta where he received his MBA from Georgia State University. He met and married Patty Nickel in Atlanta before moving to the St. Louis area. John and Patty raised a large family, spending weekends maintaining a large yard and doing projects around the house. John enjoyed growing squash, tomatoes, and peas in the backyard garden. He canned and froze vegetables for use throughout the winter. He was active in the lives of his children, teaching them how to drive a stick shift, replace a roof, plumb a sink, solve algebra equations, and pack wheel bearings. He enjoyed cooking and baking for his family and friends. He was known for his barbecued ribs, heavenly delights, chocolate chip cookies, and orange rolls. His annual holiday tradition of baking Grandma Tex's Crescent Rolls for friends and family will be fondly remembered by many St. Louis residents and is continued by his family. He was also active in the Telephone Pioneers of America, a volunteer group who donated their time doing carpentry projects in the community. The whole family spent summer vacations at the family cottage on Green Lake in Spicer, MN. John retired in 1995. He enjoyed model trains, woodworking, and collecting stamps, coins, and glass telephone wire insulators. He especially loved driving to visit his children and grandchildren in his truck, spending the long drives listening to country music and the Beach Boys. John enthusiastically supported Patty's many community activities. He served as treasurer of her campaigns in the local Town & Country political scene and baked cookies for her community orchestra concerts. John is survived by his wife Patty O. Wiggins of Town & Country; sister Barbara Hilliard, and partner Sisu Morris of Dripping Springs, TX; his 5 children: Rachel Wiggins, husband Chris Friend, of Mandeville, LA; Michelle Wiggins, husband Frank Hsieh, of Concord, MA; Rebecca Wiggins, partner Scott Farhat, of Bedford, MA; Michael John Wiggins, wife Missy Wiggins, of Shaker Heights, OH; and Elizabeth Wiggins, husband Patrick Quinn, of Chesterfield, MO. He was also the proud grandpa of 5 1/3 grandchildren: Colin and Martha Friend; Timothy Hsieh; Harrison and Sullivan Wiggins; and a little Quinn on the way.
