Gary died peacefully in his sleep on June 10, 2013 at his residence in Orangevale, CA. He was born on February 21, 1938 in Chico, CA. The greatest pride and pleasure of Gary's life was in his marriage of 53 years to his high school sweetheart, Jonita and their family: daughter Jill McLeod, her children Julia and Angus of Merced, CA; son Jordan, daughter-in-law Sheryl and their daughters Kaylene and Carson of Orangevale, CA. Gary graduated from Hamilton Union High School, Hamilton City, CA with greater social than scholarly accomplishments. However he remained in education throughout his life. He began his BA at Chico State by registering for the sample program with his high school buddy and lifelong friend, Sam Cody. That was followed by an MA in psychology at Sacramento State and later three years of graduate school in Nashville, TN where he graduated summa cum laude from George Peabody College of Education, Vanderbilt University, with a PhD in Learning Disabilities. He put this education to use during his long career in Sacramento City Unified School District where he worked tirelessly and with great compassion as a Psychologist and Special Education Administrator serving special needs children and their families. Gary's hallmark was his great laugh, quick wit and infectious sense of humor. He was a true gentleman. These essential qualities remained a part of him to the very end, in spite of the devastation of early onset Alzheimer's disease. The family is eternally grateful to his loving caregivers, of the last four years, Anh Truong and Dennis Perry. A celebration of Gary's life will be we held in the near future. Remembrances, in Gary's honor to the (, seem appropriate and are appreciated.
