James was born in Massachusetts in 1928 to James R. Dewis Sr. and Tressie P. Johnson. He graduated from Needham High School. He worked on a cattle ranch in Montana for a year.

In 1948 he joined the Air Force where for 27 years he worked on and maintained aircraft. He was a Vietnam War Veteran. He retired in 1975 where he then worked at McClellan AFB as a civil servant still maintaining aircraft for another 19 years. He enjoyed taking and developing pictures, watching planes take off and land, scuba diving, gardening, walking 5 miles every day, watching the kids play soccer, playing poker and eating sea food. When he would go to crab feeds he would out eat anyone in the room. He really liked sea food. He was President of the Aqua Knights of Atlantis 1968-1969 while stationed in the Azores.

He left this world on February 23, 2014 with family and friends by his side. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, 2 wives Rita Goodwin and his red head Pat Danekas, his eldest daughter Wanda Hansen and his grandson Kenneth Danekas. He is survived by his two sisters Phyllis Reid and Marilyn Hollembaek. Stepson David Danekas, stepdaughter Karrie Danekas, son Robert Dewis, stepdaughter Connie Turk and daughter Robin Keller along with numerous grandchildren, and handful of great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, nieces, nephews and other family members and many friends. He will be dearly missed by all but no one more than me.
