Born October 11, 1935 in Owatonna, MI passed away peacefully December 10, 2013 surrounded by family. Joan was a wonderful, loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend to many. She grew up on a working farm in Owatonna and graduated from Owatonna High School in 1954 and attended the University of Minnesota where she graduated with a degree in Economics/Education and a minor in English in 1958. On July 4, 1959 she married R. Spencer Dickinson. They moved to Orangevale. She first taught home economics and English at San Juan High School and substitute taught while raising her family. She was very involved in Notre Dame Catholic Elementary school coordinating church youth groups activities and was a founding member of the Divine Savior Parish in Orangevale were she and her husband were original members of the building committee. For 13 years she volunteered to decorate Divine Savior Church. She loved golf, downhill skiing, sewing, quilting and bridge. Joan was well known for her gardening and will be fondly remembered for sharing her garden vegetables, fruits and flowers with friends and family. Her sharing was always done with a smile on her face. She is preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, R. Spencer Dickinson; brother Marvin Gontarek and parents Kasmir and Esther Gontarek. She leaves behind all of her loving children Cathrine Dickinson, David Dickinson and wife Linda, grandchildren Eric, Spencer and Darlene, Theresa Dickinson and partner Craig St. Claire, Denise Dickinson (Bienias) and husband Rick, her sister Jeanne Thomas from Austin, TX and foster brother Jerry Prondzinski and wife Dee from Eau Claire, WI. Friends and loved ones are invited to attend a memorial mass that will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 19, 2013 at Divine Savior Catholic Church located at 9079 Greenback Lane, Orangevale. A reception at the church hall will follow the mass that all are encouraged to attend to help celebrate Joan's life with her family and friends.
