NESBIT, Josephine Killian (Gilligan)
Josephine passed away on November 6, 2013 at her home at the age of 95. Josephine was born on August 18, 1918 in San Francisco, California to Ada and Joseph Killian. Her father was an engineer for Standard Oil and thus lived in several cities and states and had many happy memories growing up with her family and her 2 sisters, Isabel and Mary.
Josephine attended Piedmont High School, UCLA , and the University of Utah. She married John B. Gilligan in September, 1942 and spent the next 36 years raising her 4 children in Piedmont. She was a member of Children's Hospital Auxiliary Branch - Hilltop and also was a Docent at the Oakland Museum. She moved to Sacramento (Campus Commons) in 1976 upon John's retirement. John passed away in 1977 and in July of 1981 she married Raymond Nesbit.
She loved her years at Campus Commons and was an active bridge player, a member of the Campus Commons Women's Club, participated in a Bible study group, enjoyed going to the theater, and belonged to a gourmet dinner club. She was also actively involved in 2 book clubs, was an avid reader, and loved Netflix. She never missed doing a daily crossword puzzle. Josephine was a devout Catholic and rarely missed her Breakfast Group after mass each Sunday with her friends and Father Tom.
Josephine was a true role model to her family and friends. She was always thinking of others by taking friends to doctor appointments, visiting those who were ill, and never knew a stranger. Her examples of kindness and thoughtfulness will be continued in her legacy.
Josephine is survived by her daughter Kit Brown (Roy) of Woodstock, England, her son Patrick Gilligan (Shelley) of Hillsborough, California, her daughter Lesley Tejada of Sacramento, and was preceded in death by her son Michael Gilligan (Susie) in 2010.
