Nicholas was born in El Paso TX, son of Rosa Fuentes Gutierrez and Jose I. Gutierrez. He was the second son of four children by Jose Ignacio. He is survived by his brothers Joe Henry, Richard Albert and Edward Joseph.
Nicholas graduated from UCLA with a Bachelor's degree in psychology in 1964. While in college he joined the US Naval reserves. After receiving his diploma he went on active duty from 1965 to 1967 with the United States Naval Construction Battalion. He was stationed in Davisville Rhode Island CB base and from there he was deployed to Vietnam.
Upon returning to civilian life he used the skills he learned from his father in architectural drafting. Over time he qualified to take the architectural licensing exam in California. He passed the exam and practiced architecture until he retired. After his retirement he made good use of his bilingual skills and taught English as a second language.
He was preceded in death by his mother Rosa (1945) and his father Jose (1985). A private service will be held in celebration of Nicholas' life.
