SLAKEY, Jr., Roger Louis Apr 19,1927 - May 21, 2014 Roger passed away peacefully in McLean, Virginia. Born in Sacramento to the late Roger, Sr., and Marie Slakey, he is a graduate of Christian Brothers School, Sacramento City College, and UC Berkeley, with an MA in English Literature from the University of Michigan and a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University. He taught at Georgetown University from 1959 until 1999, including two terms as chairman of the English Department. He was a lover of music and a Master Gardener. Preceded in death by his wife, Zaida Slakey, brothers, Rev. Williarn Slakey and Noel Slakey (April), and brother-in-law, Dan Carmazzi; survived by sons, Roger III (DiAnn), Capt Joseph, USN, (Patricia), and Francis (Gina); second wife, Mari-Ellen Slakey; step-daughters, Amy and Jill; sister, Marilyn Carmazzi; brothers Bob (Mercedes) and Tom (Marion); granddaughters Stephanie, Christina, Kinley and Zaida; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Roger had to drop out of the Maryknoll Seminary in Mountain View due to a severe case of undulant fever, which affected his health for many years. He also overcame dyslexia and went on to a distinguished academic career. A devout Catholic all his life, dedicated to the service of others, he nursed his first wife through terminal cancer and then raised his three young sons by himself. He also cared for his mother in his home during the last years of her life. He in turn was cared for at home by his wife Mari Ellen during the last years of his life. Relatives in Sacramento are planning a Memorial Mass at St. Anthony Church, 660 Florin Road, on Saturday, July 19, at 11:00 a.m., with a reception to follow.
