SALISBURY - Dr. Abner Carr Withers Sr., 75, of Salisbury, passed away Tuesday, March 19, 2013, at his residence surrounded by his loving family.
Born Aug. 14, 1937, in Spencer to the late Sallie Mattox Withers and Benjamin Roscoe Withers, he was educated in Spencer schools and graduated from Spencer High School. He graduated from UNC School of Medicine in Chapel Hill.
Dr. Withers served in the U.S. Navy attached to the U.S. Marine Corps.
Dr. Withers served his Internship at the Virginia Medical College in Richmond, Va., and was in Family Practice in Drexel until 1992. He served in Ambulatory Care in Belwood and at Rowan Regional Medical Center Outpatient Clinic in Granite Quarry before retiring in November 2000.
Dr. Withers was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Adam and Eve Sunday School Class and served on the Wellness Committee. He was a past member of Granite Quarry Civitan Club, American Academy of Family Practice and North Carolina Medical Society.
In addition to his parents, Dr. Withers was preceded in death by his infant grandson, Wesley C. Withers; brothers B.R. "Buck" Withers Jr. and George Wesley Withers; sisters Martha W. Agner and Alene W. Ritchie.
Surviving are his wife, Lynn Clarke Withers, who he married Sept. 17, 1983; sons Abner Carr Withers Jr. and wife Reyna Leon Withers of Raritan, N.J., Paul Wesley Withers and wife Penny Mathews Withers of Victoria, Texas, Gregory Jay Williams and wife Angela Arrowood Williams of Morganton; daughter Jill Suzanne Williams of Taylorsville; sisters Sarah W. Keesee of Salisbury and Elizabeth W. "Bo Bo" Smith of Salisbury; grandchildren Kenneth Zambrana and Benjamin Zambrana of Orlando, Fla., Emily Withers, Abner Carr "Cubby" Withers III of Raritan, N.J., Grace Withers, John Withers and Nathan Withers of Victoria, Texas, Bailey Rose, Hannah Williams and Eli Williams of Morganton; mother-in-law Hazel M. Clarke of Morganton; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law Elizabeth S. Withers of Conyers, Ga., Anne S. Loeblein of Salisbury, Randy and Pamela C. Pritchard of Glen Alpine; and many beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Visitation: The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the Summersett Funeral Home
Service: A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday (March 22) at First United Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. Stephen D. Haines and Samantha J. Wesley. Military Honors will be conducted by the Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard.
