SALISBURY - Armondo Salerno, 90, of Salisbury, went to be with the Lord Monday, Aug. 11, 2014, at W.G. Hefner VA Medical Center Hospice.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard and Army in World War II, where he earned a Purple Heart.
Armondo was preceded in death by his mother, Filomena Leonardo, and stepfather Nicholas Leonardo; brother Joseph Leonardo; and sister Marie Calculli.
He is survived by his wife, Martha, and beloved dog Ginger; stepson Charles R. Ketner (Holly); grandsons Matt Ketner (Tara) and Sam Ketner (Whitney); granddaughter Erin Ketner; great-granddaughter Chloe Ketner; great-grandsons Jax, Banx and Layne Ketner; sisters Angelina Marino (John) and Florence Civitillo (Vincent); and many nieces and nephews of New York and Las Vegas.
God found an empty place in His garden, then looked down upon the earth and saw your tired face. He knew you were suffering and in pain, so He closed your weary eyelids and whispered, "Peace is thine." He put His arms around you and lifted you to rest in God's beautiful garden. May you rest in peace.
Thanks to Jan Blume of VA Home Telehealth for your help and care. To Rebecca Noell, NP-VA Home Based Primary Care, who helped us through all the hard times and getting Armondo into the VA Hospice House where he was very happy. All the nurses, assistants, and complete staff were so loving and compassionate. Also, thanks to VA Chaplain (Chris) for your daily visits and concern. Last but not least, Father Peter Fitzgibbons for your visits. You always brightened our day.
Armondo will be cremated, and his remains will be spread on the grounds of Saint Agnes, where he spent many happy years in the home for boys.
