SALISBURY - Bruce Ray Penley, age 79, went home to live with his Savior Sunday, Aug. 3, 2014.

A Rowan County native, he was the son of the late John R. Penley Jr. and Susan Walker Penley.

Bruce graduated from Woodleaf High School in 1953 and served in the U.S. Army from 1954-1957 during the Korean War.

He was also a graduate of Gaston College, a member of VFW, American Legion, Eureka Masonic Lodge and the Shriners. Bruce was a member of Safe Harbor Baptist Church in Granite Quarry and retired from Duke Energy.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ward Penley; stepdaughters Lynn Williamson (Hollis), Mitzi Mann (Rick), both of Thomasville, and Emily Mohamed (Wally) of Salisbury; and stepson Berry Ward (Karen) of Gold Hill. He leaves behind 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Visitation: 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5 at Safe Harbor Baptist Church, 270 Dunns Mountain Church Road, Salisbury, NC 28146.

Service: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6 at Safe Harbor Baptist Church with Pastor Josh Montgomery officiating. Burial at a later date at Brookhill Memorial Gardens, 8625 Hwy. 52, Rockwell, NC 28138, conducted by the Veterans Council. Military honors by the Lyerly Volunteer Honor Guard.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Safe Harbor Baptist Church, Bruce Penley Memorial, 270 Dunns Mountain Church Road, Salisbury, NC 28146.
