Danny R. Cooper

SALISBURY - Mr. Danny R. Cooper, 70, of Salisbury, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 31, 2014, at Novant Health Rowan Medical Center.

Danny was born Jan. 10, 1944, in Monroe, a son of the late Ray John Cooper and Bessie Wilson Cooper. Danny was a graduate of Lee Edwards High School in Asheville, Class of 1962. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Mars Hill College, as well as a Master's in Guidance and Counseling from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte and an Advanced Degree in Administration from Appalachian State University.

He retired in 1997 after serving 31 years with the Rowan/Salisbury School System. He also worked as an instructor with Rowan-Cabarrus Community College GED Inmate Program.

An active member of Milford Hills United Methodist Church, Danny was a member of the Cross-Talk Sunday School Class, as well as the U.M.M. and the Cheer Givers Senior Group.

He was an active supporter of Special Olympics, Rowan/Salisbury Retired School Personnel and volunteered with various organizations throughout the community and state.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 47 years, Jane Slate Cooper; two sons, John S. Cooper and wife Arlene and David J. Cooper and wife Courtney; three grandchildren, Maci, Madelyn and Maggie Cooper, all of Salisbury. Danny is also survived by his sister, Marilyn Garber of Woodstock, Ga.; brother-in-law Spencer C. Slate of Key Largo, Fla.; Mary Rachel Taylor of Old Fort; Arnold and Nina Cooper of Aberdeen; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation: A visitation will held Tuesday (Sept 2) from 7-9 p.m. at Summersett Funeral Home.

Service: A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday (Sept. 3) at Milford Hills United Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. Steve Combs. Burial will follow at Rowan Memorial Park.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Milford Hills United Methodist Church, 1630 Statesville Blvd., Salisbury, NC 29144; or , 222 S. Church St., Suite 336M, Charlotte, NC 28202.
