Jesse James Watkins

WOODLEAF - Jesse James Watkins, 90, of Woodleaf passed away Sunday, Nov. 24, 2013 at Novant Health Rowan Medical Center.

Born June 16, 1923 in Apex, he was the son of the late Annie Douglas Watkins. He was educated in the St. Mary's School, Hillborough. Mr. Watkins was a veteran of the United States Army, where he served from 1943-45. He served with the 551st Anti-Aircraft Battalion, 20th Corp attached to Patton's 3rd Army and received five Bronze Service Stars.

A roofing and building contractor, he operated Chapel Hill Roofing for 25 years and Watkins Industries in Myrtle Beach, S.C. for 14 years before retiring. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

Mr. Watkins was preceded in death by his wife, Nell Watkins on July 9, 1999 and a son, Steve Watkins on Jan. 28, 2013.

Those left to cherish his memory include his son, Gary D. Watkins and wife Diane of Woodleaf; daughter, Lorrie Ann Watkins of Salisbury; daughter-in-law, Linda Bivins Watkins of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; grandchildren, Steve W. Watkins and wife Linette of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Angela Watkins Lowery and husband Marc of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Jessica Watkins Andrews and husband Brian of Raleigh and Katie Watkins of Salisbury; and great-grandchildren, Kyle Watkins, Kaylee Watkins, Royal Lowery, Autumn Lowery, Haven Lowery, Charleston Lowery, all of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Jennifer Mabe and Aaron Mabe, both of Winston-Salem.

Visitation:The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday,Nov. 26, 2013 at the Summersett Funeral Home.

Funeral Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27 at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Rick Cockerham, officiating. Mr. Watkins will lie in state 30 minutes before the service. Entombment will follow at Rowan Memorial Park Mausoleum.
