John L. Hopkins

KANNAPOLIS - Mr. John Lowell Hopkins, 64, of Kannapolis, passed away Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014, at Carolinas Medical Center Northeast in Concord.

Born Dec. 30, 1949, in Key West, Fla., he was the son of the late Howard George Hopkins and Ruby Morgan Hopkins.

Mr. Hopkins was a graduate of South Rowan High School. After high school, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served during the Vietnam War.

Mr. Hopkins worked for Rea Construction as an electrical specialist until retirement.

He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoyed hunting, flint knapping, gun and knife collecting, reloading ammunition and collecting military memorabilia.

He was a member of AmVets, American Legion, VFW, Masons and a lifetime NRA member. Mr. Hopkins was of the Lutheran faith. He loved spending time with his family and friends.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Joyce Patterson Hopkins, who he married May 5, 1974; daughter Toni H. Duran (Ronnie) of Missouri; son John L. Hopkins Jr. (Jennifer) of Kannapolis; sister, Anne Poplin (Bob) of Salisbury; grandchildren Brandon and Tyler Denney, Reigna and Sophia Hopkins, Sadie Sicuro; nephews John Nivens, William Poplin; and his cat, Festus.

Arrangements: Visitation will be held 12-1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30 at Summersett Funeral Home. Graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. at the U.S. National Cemetery, Statesville Boulevard location with Rev. Chris Williams officiating.
