John Melvin Cashion

SALISBURY - John Melvin Cashion, 88, of Salisbury, passed away Friday, Sept. 27, 2013 surrounded by his wife and family.

He was born March 31, 1925 to the late John Barsabus Cashion and Ella Mae Stewart Cashion in Stony Point. He married Helen Poole Cashion on Sept. 27, 1946 and worked at Cannon Mills in Kannapolis for 28 years. Mr. Cashion was a member of Neel Road Baptist Church and had served as Deacon. He was also a member of the American Legion and the North Carolina Baptist Men. He enjoyed fishing, camping, gardening, watching ballgames and going on mission trips.

He served in the United States Army in the 15th Engineer Battalion, 9th Inf. Division and was a veteran of fvie campaigns during World War II: Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe. Mr. Cashion was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained in battle in October 1944. He received an honorable discharge in October 1945.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by siblings, Aileen Shumake, Linford Cashion, and Deanie Stikeleather.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Helen Cashion; sons, Steve Cashion and wife Pat and Gene Cashion and wife Regeana; daughter, Cindy Russell and husband Hayes; grandchildren, Paul Cashion and wife Laurie, Christy Jeansonne and husband John, Bryce Russell and wife Nikki, Katie Yacevich and husband Kyle, Zack Russell, Jordan Mammano and Tommy Long; great-grandchildren, Chelesea and Luke Jeansonne; several step-great grandchildren; sister, Nevada Douglas; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Visitation and Services: Family will receive friends at Neel Road Baptist Church in Salisbury on Monday, Sept. 30, 2013 from 12:30-2 p.m. Funeral will follow at 2 p.m. with Reverend Charles Allard and Dr. Neil Westbrook officiating. Burial will be Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2013 at the Salisbury National Cemetery at the Hefner VA Medical Center. The body will be at Chapman Funeral Home, 158 Stony Point School Road, Stony Point, NC 28678 prior to the services. Viewing available Sunday, Sept. 29 from 2-4p.m.
