Joseph Nathaniel Summers

SALISBURY - Joseph Nathaniel Summers, 67, of Kepley Road, Salisbury, died Tuesday, June 10, 2014, at the V.A. Hospice Facility in Salisbury.

Joe was born Feb. 8, 1947, in Rowan County and was the son of the late Odell and Lucille Summers of Rowan County.

He was a graduate of R.A. Clement High School in Cleveland, where his classmates were like family to him. After graduation Joe joined the U.S. Marines, serving in combat in Vietnam. He was severely injured in service and subsequently returned home with a Purple Heart. Joe often said he joined the military when he thought it was the right thing to do but had since learned that God does not condone war. After returning home he began studying the Bible at the encouragement of his brother, Odell, and was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses in June of 1976. He served as an elder in the Hurley School Road Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses, an appointment he greatly valued, and had been a full time minister of Jehovah, along with his wife, for three years prior to his declining health. Joe derived the greatest satisfaction and joy from helping others to learn to appreciate his wonderful God Jehovah and to look forward to the promises He holds out to all who will listen.

Joe is survived by his wife, Trish Summers; four children, Varonica Godfrey, Eric Summers and wife, Christy, Lynda Summers, and Keith Summers and wife, Lori; four grandchildren, Mahogane and Magenta Godfrey, Zaria Summers and Bianca Summers; two sisters, Pauline Young and Patricia "Susie" Summers; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
