Leo V. Basinger

ROCKWELL - Mr. Leo Van Basinger, 67, of Rockwell, passed away Aug. 11, 2014, at Novant Health Rowan Medical Center.

Mr. Basinger was born May 16, 1947, in Rowan County, son of the late Harvey A. Basinger and Roxie Shuping Basinger. He was a 1965 graduate of East Rowan High School and had worked at Salisbury Tractor for 20 years. He had also retired from the Salisbury Post Office after 21 years as a Rural Mail Carrier.

Mr. Basinger was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served from February 1967 until July 1968 with the 131st Hue Phu Bai South Vietnam Aviation, where he worked on Helicopters and OV-1 Mo-Hawk.

He was a member of Organ Lutheran Church, Organ Lutheran Church Seniors and Salisbury Moose Lodge. He enjoyed motorcycles, yard work and also enjoyed working in his shop and working with his tractor.

He is survived by his wife, Brenda Brown Basinger, who he married Dec. 5, 1970. He is also survived by siblings Leona Funderburk, Herman Basinger and girlfriend Bessie Smith, Coy Basinger and wife Bonnie, Cleo Haynes; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Judy Parker and husband Marlin, Larry Brown and wife Pat, Jimmy Brown and wife Denene; and mother-in-law Betty Brown.

He is also survived by nieces and nephews JoAnn and husband Perry, Sandy, Lori and husband Keith, Wendy, Rodney, Tina and husband Blake, Jana, Michael, Jennifer and Zeke; great-nieces and great-nephews Nelson, Nikki, Amber, Bryson, Carson, Jacob and Norah.

Visitation: The family will receive friends at the Organ Lutheran Church Parlor from 9:30 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13.

Service: There will be a graveside service with Military Rites at Organ Lutheran Church on Wednesday, Aug. 13 at 11 a.m. conducted by Rev. Carlin Ours.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Organ Lutheran Church; or Organ Senior Group, 1515 Organ Church Road, Salisbury, NC 28146.
