SALISBURY - Oscar Lee "Buddy" Walton Jr., 75, of Salisbury, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013, at the Glenn A. Kiser Hospice House surrounded by family.
Born April 11, 1938, in Spencer, he was the son of the late Katherine Mae Honeycutt Walton and Oscar Lee Walton Sr.
He was educated in the Spencer schools and graduated from Spencer High School, Class of 1956.
He was employed for the Salisbury Post from 1949-1956, served in the U.S. Navy from 1956-1962 and returned to the Salisbury Post, where he served as City Circulation Manager until he retired in 2001.
He was a member of Oakdale Baptist Church and Enon Baptist Church; was a member of Spencer Jaycees from 1967-1972; Spencer Optimist Club from 1980-1985; Salisbury Optimist, Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post 342, Mid-Atlantic Circulation Managers Association, Cincinnati Reds Scouting Organization, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary; and was the Flotilla Commander with the Coast Guard Auxiliary.
While serving in the U.S. Navy, he received a Letter of Commendation from Commander of Fighter Squadron 24 in 1958, Certified Combat Aircrew Member, 1958, Good Conduct Medal in 1960, Presidential Unit Citation, 1958 and China Sea Campaign Medal in 1958.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Hazel Virginia "Jenny" Hoover, in 2000.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Billie Rae Barger Walton; daughter Mary Walton Sprinkle and husband Cameron; son Alan Scott Walton and wife Kim, all of Salisbury; sister Martha Jane Bailey and husband Freddie of Ocean Isle Beach; grandchildren Brandon Scott Walton, Taylor Nicole Walton and Mackenzie Catherine Sprinkle.
Visitation: The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Summersett Funeral Home; and at other times, the family will be at the residence of his son Alan Scott Walton, 203 S. Deerfield Circle, Plantation Ridge.
Service: Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday (Dec. 21) at Summersett Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Rick Cockerham, minister of Calvary Baptist Church.
Interment will follow at Oakdale Baptist Church with Military Graveside Rites conducted by the Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard.
