Richard 'Rick' Futrell

SALISBURY - Mr. Richard "Rick" David Futrell, 62, of Salisbury, passed away Sunday, March 9, 2014, at Glenn A. Kiser Hospice House in Salisbury.

Rick was born Oct. 17, 1951, in Rowan County, the son of the late Augustus F. Futrell and Esther Leonard Futrell.

Rick was a 1971 graduate of East Rowan High School and a 1972 graduate of Rowan-Cabarrus Community College. He was a member of Destiny City Church.

Rick had retired after 30 years with South Salisbury Fire Department and was 1989 Fireman of the Year. He received numerous fireman's awards and was also a first responder.

Rick was a former Cub Scoutmaster/Den Leader for Troop 316 from 1985-1987 at Wittenberg Lutheran Church and was Rowan District Cubmaster of the Year in 1986.

Rick retired in February 2014 from Charlotte Truck Driving School as a Driving Instructor. He had also worked for J.B. Hunt and H.O. Wolding for seven years as a truck driver; and worked 20 years in the manufacturing business with Bendix, Federal Mogel, York International and Kern Rubber Company.

He was an avid fisherman and gardener and enjoyed being with his family.

Rick was a helper and servant of mankind, who always believed in keeping his word. He loved being a husband and father.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Roland M. Futrell.

Survivors include wife Judy Ritchie Futrell, who he married Dec. 5, 1971; son David Scott Futrell; aunt Louise Rice of Salisbury; half sisters Dorothy Watts of Boomer and Frances Russell of Greensboro. Rick is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 13 at Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell.

Funeral Service: 1 p.m. Friday, March 14, at Nazareth Community Church in Rockwell conducted by Rev. Mike Shoaf, pastor, and Rev. Don Vess, pastor of Destiny City Church. Interment will follow at St. Paul's Lutheran Church Cemetery, Salisbury.
