CLEVELAND - Rev. Shirley Thomas Jones, 87, of Cleveland, was called to his eternal resting place Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013, at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.
Born July 17, 1925, in Ashe County to the late Pet Graham Jones and Daniel Ruben Jones, he attended Appalachian University, then Duke University School of Divinity. Rev. Jones served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict.
Rev. Jones worked in farming and as a Storm Trooper Insurance Agent and then went into the ministry, where he served the United Methodist Church for 48 years.
Rev. Jones is survived by his wife of 63 years, Betty Ruth Honeycutt Jones; two sons, Wayne Jones and his wife, Sharon of Nashville, N.C., and Dana Jones and his wife Wendy of Raleigh; a daughter, Terry Jones of Salisbury; and grandchildren Matthew, Danielle, Tyler and Raney Jones. Also surviving are two brothers, Basil Jones of Todd and D.R. Jones of West Jefferson; and three sisters, Thelma Hardin of Boone, Mattie Cooper of Glendale Springs and Betty Nell Jones of Greensboro.
Visitation: The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday (Feb. 15) at Summersett Funeral Home.
Service: A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 16) at Cleveland United Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. Randy Powell of South River United Methodist Church, and Mrs. Evelyn Mooney.
Burial will follow at Woodleaf United Methodist Church Cemetery, with military honors by a volunteer Honor Guard.
