William 'Bill' Smith

SPENCER - William (Bill) Stewart Smith, 79, of Spencer, passed away Saturday, July 5, 2014, at Brian Center of Salisbury.

Born Feb. 22, 1935, in Chelsey, Mass., William was the son of the late Edna Mae Moore and Russell William Smith. He received his Bachelor's degree from Appalachian State University.

He was a retired veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, serving in the Korean and Vietnam wars. William was a Veteran's Representative for the NC Employment Commission. He was of the Catholic faith.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Senora Hunter, who he married on Aug. 6, 1960. They met and married while working at the American Embassy in Ankara, Turkey.

Also left are his sons, Russell Smith (Susan Carpenter) of Charlotte and William Hunter Smith (Sonya) of Gold Hill; daughter, Sandra Hart (Todd) of Savannah, Ga.; grandchildren Rory Shae Oropeza, Rachel Hart, Alyssa Smit and Chandler Bassinger.

Graveside Service: 2 p.m. Thursday, July 10 at the Salisbury National Cemetery, 501 Statesville Blvd., Salisbury, NC 28144 with VAMC Chaplain Fitzgibbons officiating. Military honors by Lyerly Volunteer Honor Guard.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, KS 66675-8516.
