April 11, 1924 ~ Feb. 17, 2013
Afton Bryson Smith died Sunday, February 17, 2013, in Logan, Utah. She was born April 11, 1924, in Bountiful, Utah, daughter of Allen and Corrilla Bryson. She married Richard Leo Smith on March 28, 1945, in the Salt Lake City, Utah, LDS temple.
Afton's formal education included a bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University in 1946, and a master's degree in fine art from Utah State University in 1981. In addition to her caring work as a homemaker and mother, she was a generous and creative volunteer in numerous church positions, a substitute elementary school teacher, and a prolific artist and writer. The joys and views of her world are beautifully expressed in her paintings, drawings, prints, poems, and perhaps, most sensitively, through the hundreds of heartfelt letters written to her family and friends.
Surviving are her three daughters, Cynthia Prante (Franklin), Susan Salmon (David), Andrea Denton (Stanford); two sons, Merrill Smith (Pam), Bradley Smith (Meredith); 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; five brothers and one sister.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., Sat., Feb. 23, 2013, in the Logan LDS Lundstrom Park 2nd Ward Chapel, 1260 N. 1600 East, with Bishop David Anderson conducting. Of my years in the North Shore 1st Ward, few memories are more enduring or have had greater influence in the years since than those I have of this woman of grace.
Of no other person I know can these words be more truly spoken: loving, kind, accepting, generous of spirit, noble, full of light and goodness. And perhaps no one more than I tested these virtues!
Afton was a star in this world whose light here will never dim.
My sincere sympathy to Afton's wonderful family. The passing of a mother, no matter the circumstances, is a momentous loss which is compensated only by memories and hope. You all were a gift to her but she, too, was a gift to you. Both your parents filled their space and time here with goodness and it will gratefully survive them through you, their greatest legacy.
With Love

Afton was a true friend to my mother, Marian. They shared a deep love for the arts and had great respect for each other's talents. I remember Afton and Dick as gentle, thoughtful, generous, faithful and deep thinking individuals who raised wonderful children with whom our family shared many good times together in Wilmette. My condolences to the family.

I had the honor to meet Afton once, and immediately saw the grace and gentleness that is reflected in her daughter Sue (who I have come to know over the years). Our sympathies to the whole family. You will be in our hearts and prayers.

What wonderful memories I have of Afton. I loved her art, poetry and especially her friendship. The year I travelled to Mexico with a motorhome filled with items for an orphanage it was with outfits for fourteen lovely dolls which Afton and a daughter had
provided and lovingly made. I will never forget the excitement and joy of those little girls to receive such beautiful gifts when they had so very little. Shannon Holmes
