4/20/1927 ~ 11/6/2013|
Our beloved father, grandfather and dear friend, Alfred Richard Chandonia will be dearly missed. Alfred was known by family as Dick and by friends as Al. He was the 5th of 6 children born to William T. Chandonia and Olive Hogan Chandonia in South Bend, Indiana. He graduated from Central High School in 1945 and attended Indiana State University and the University of Utah.
Dick married Dortha Shubert in March 1950 (divorced). They had 2 children together: Jeffrey Laine Chandonia (Betsy) and Mark Bradley Chandonia (Kim).
On October 11, 1963 Dick married the love of his life Rose Alene Stringham Burgon. To this union Rose brought her 6 children: Margaret Burgon Klemp, Lee Jerry Burgon (Deanne), Rose Alene Burgon Call, David Burgon (Kathy), Mary K. Burgon Scott (Tom), Elizabeth A. Burgon (Clinton Sheppard). Dick was the proud grandfather of 18 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild.
One moment the jokester, another the patriarch, and minutes later the minister. You could always count on Dick to tell a good joke and be the first to laugh. Among his hobbies were: hunting, fishing, road trips, and panning for gold. He loved the outdoors as much as his late wife Rose did and instilled this love in their children and grandchildren.
He was very active with his lay ministry and ministered all the time in all settings to anyone that would listen. He was always the passionate and cheerful minister. In retirement, Al became very active in prison ministry at Purgatory Prison and the Utah State Prison.
Dick was preceded in death by his mother, father, all of his siblings, wife Rose, and his sons: Lee J. Burgon and Jeffery L. Chandonia.
Al was a member of the Society of Logistics Engineers and at the time of his passing he was a very active member of the Calvary Chapel. The Pastor Keith Kadke will be presiding over the funeral. He will be receiving graveside military honors for his service in the US Army during WWII.
A gathering for friends and family to pay their respects will be held on Sunday, November 10th from 5-7 pm at Jenkins-Soffe Funeral Home located at 4760 S. State Street.
Graveside services will be Monday, November 11th (Veterans Day) 10 am at the Larkin Sunset Lawn Cemetery (2350 E. 1300 S.)
A potluck provided by Alfred's family and friends will follow the service, to be held at Calvary Chapel located at 460 W. Century Drive (4350 S). All are invited to share memories about Al during the luncheon.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to one of the three following charities: The
