Donald R. Christensen Obituary
Jan. 28, 1947 ~ Feb. 14, 2013
Donald R Christensen passed away peacefully at The Irish Cottage in St George, Utah, on February 14, 2013. He was born on January 28, 1947 to Millicent and Preston Christensen in Salt Lake City, UT. Don married Sandra (Golden) Stephenson on January 15, 1999.
Don grew up in Salt Lake and attended South High and Utah Technical College. On Valentine's Day in 1966, he dragged his best friend, Steve Aardema, down to the Marine Corps recruiting office. Since then, they've wished each other Happy Anniversary on 2/14. Don received a Purple Heart but always claimed he was in the hospital with a minor shrapnel wound when they were being awarded. He served with the 1/9th and 3/26th U.S. Marine Corps. He began working for Utah Power & Light Company in 1969 on the survey crew and retired in 2002 as a transmission engineer.
Donnie joined Hidden Valley Country Club in 1985 and immediately joined the Brown Group. Oh how DC loved to play golf! And absolutely hated losing at it. Don treasured his friends from Utah Power and Hidden Valley. Don and Sandy were married on the beach in Mazatlan with a great party with many of those friends. They moved to St George in 2007 and found their precious Zoe the Beagle to entertain them.
The family was blessed to have the angels from Zion's Way Hospice and The Irish Cottage guiding them, and cannot begin to thank them enough.
Don is survived by his wife Sandy; mother Millie; sons Shawn Christensen and Skip and Zak Stephenson; daughter Debbie (Willie) Hayden; brothers Randy (Sallie) Christensen and Kim (Theresa) Christensen; grandchildren Melissa (Justin) Shannon, Tim and Nate Maxwell, Moriah Rose and Nick Hayden, Chandler and Carter Stephenson and Trevor Clayton; and great-granddaughter Miya Rayne Maxwell. He was preceded in death by his father Preston and his brother David.
Graveside Services will be held Saturday, March 2nd at 12:00 P.M. at Mount Olivet Cemetery, 1342 E 500 S, Salt Lake City, with full military honors provided by the U.S. Marine Corps. Following the service, a wake to celebrate Donnie's life will be held at Hidden Valley Country Club, 11820 S Highland Drive Sandy, Utah at 2:00 P.M.
Arrangements are made under the direction of Heideman Hughes Mortuary 435-674-5000. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Assistance League of Southern Utah, P.O. Box 910728, St George, UT 84791, in Don's name would be fondly appreciated.
