Donna Lee Olson
Donna Lee Jefferies Olson, 88, passed away peacefully at home in Salt Lake City, Utah on Tuesday, September 25, 2012, incident to age. She was born on July 24, 1924 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Mary Idarene (Bertha) McDonald and Paul Boshard Jefferies. She grew up in Salt Lake City, Seattle Washington, and Los Angeles California. Other than five wonderful years in the San Francisco bay area, she lived most of her adult life in Salt Lake City.
She loved learning and excelled at John Marshall High School, Los Angeles, California, as a leader of six student organizations and commencement speaker. Her college education at
was interrupted at age 19 by marriage and motherhood, but once her children were grown she earned her Bachelor's Degree in History with Highest Honors from the University of Utah at age 63.
As a Junior Hostess at the Hollywood Canteen during World War II, she met her eternal sweetheart, Army Private Ferron Allred Olson, of Vernon, Utah. Four months later they married in the Salt Lake Temple, on February 1, 1944. They were blessed with five outstanding children: Kandace Kae (Keith) Prisbrey, Randall J (Ruth), Paul Ferron (Jill, deceased, then Camille), Jeffery Ernest (Julie), and Richard John (Marilyn). They have 23 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren. Her grandchildren will long remember the fun times she gave them at the Olson cabin. As long as she was able, she cared for her husband of 68 years and other family members. She was an excellent cook and seamstress and had a rare ability to make and keep friends in many parts of the world.
She was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints all her life, serving faithfully at ward and stake levels in Primary, Young Women, Relief Society and Sunday School. She was a den mother for all four of her sons, one of the first female released-time seminary teachers, a proselytizing missionary with Ferron in the Florida Tallahassee Mission (1987-88), and for ten years a volunteer at the Salt Lake City Veteran's Administration Hospital. She had a keen sense of humor and an abiding faith, and we will miss her wit and gentle ways.
She is survived by her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Marian, and daughter-in-law Jill.
Funeral services will be held Monday, October 1, 2012, at 11:00 a.m., at the Yalecrest First Ward, 1035 South 1800 East, Salt Lake City. Friends may call Sunday, September 30, 2012, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Larkin Sunset Lawn, 2350 East 1300 South, Salt Lake City, and prior to the funeral from 9:00 to 10:45 a.m. at Yalecrest First Ward. Interment will be at the Vernon, Utah cemetery.
The family wishes to especially thank Mill Creek Hospice and the many people who gave Donna Lee such tender loving care in her final years.
