Harold Clarke Nielson Ph.D. Obituary
Harold Clarke Nielson PhD
1930 ~ 2013
Salt Lake City, Utah-Harold Clarke Nielson (aka Amoeba to the Carbon HS Class of '48) was born May 31, 1930, first son of Dean and Verena Nielson. He died March 20, 2013 from complications of lung cancer.
Clarke "had a good life"; was proud of being football co-captain and making all-state mention in HS and all conference at CEU, where he graduated in 1951; was drafted and married wife of 61 years Joyce on Dec 27, 1951 while on Christmas leave. He attended radio school at Camp Roberts, then was assigned to the Army Security Agency and served a year in Germany monitoring Russian radio communications along the East German border. In later years, he would explain his acute hearing loss as "thanks to Uncle Sam" because of the intense "white noise" blasts from the Russian radio operators emitted before sending coded messages..
After being discharged from the army in 1953, he pursued his education at Univ of Utah and attained his PhD in Physiological Psychology and Experimental Biology; he had a promising research career with the VA Hospitals in Kansas City MO and Sepulveda CA with adjunct positions at Univ of Missouri, KC and UCLA. But when offered a professorship at the U of U Psych Dept, he returned to renew friendships and give his family the Utah "Mother Nature Experience" he loved-fishing, hunting, and later golf.
After 30 years as a research and teaching professor at the Univ of Utah, Clarke enjoyed his retirement until health issues slowed him down.
Survivors include wife Joyce, son Pete, daughter Pam and son-in-law Roger VanAndel; brother Leon (Peggy), sisters Pat (Terry) Campbell, FaunAnn (Daryl) Bandeka, sister-in-law Mae (Clayton, brother, deceased) and many nephews and nieces.
In lieu of a funeral, the family will gather at our home to remember Clarke, on Friday, April 12, starting around 4 PM. In Lieu of flowers, make a donation to the or enjoy a night out with friends and/or family.
Joyce would like to thank all the caring staff at Huntsman Hospital, CareSource, but especially nurses Laura and Kamille (Applegate Home Care) for their loving care and support.
