1944 ~ 2014
I was born Oct. 10th, 1944 and I died Jan.10, 2014. I can't believe it! I thought I might be the exception, so much for that! I was born and raised in Salt Lake City. My parents were Norman Kempner and Irene Parker Kempner. I went to schools in the Granite School District and I am a proud graduate of Granite High Class of "62.
I went to Westminster College and dropped out the same year. The next year I went to the College of Southern Utah and dropped out the same year. I was not ready for college. I had a pushy mother who didn't see I might have learning problems. I entered my senior year comprehending at a 3rd grade level. I took the first remedial reading classes offered by Granite District, and I owe those
so much. I made vast improvements but I was still not ready for college. I did not go back for 14 years until I was 33 years old. I was able to be successful because I met the love of my life, Lyda Hibbard. We married in October 1977 and enjoyed 25 years of wedded bliss until MS took her from the world in 2003. I still miss her terribly each day.
I graduated from the University of Utah in 1985 and began my career as a school teacher in 1986. I continued to teach US Government and Comparative World Religion classes until I was forced to quit due to cancer in 2014. Most of my career has been at Valley High School in Jordan District. The most rewarding place I could ever teach. My students mean so much to me. I was an avid outdoors man and especially enjoyed fishing and sport shooting. I was a proud "Art Nerd" and collected original artwork and enjoyed a large collection of Utah artwork.
I survived these last few months on the kindness of friends and strangers but mostly by help from my Valley family. I especially want to thank Val Brandt, Sharon Jensen, and my sister Dee Ann.
Survived by: sister Dee Ann(Aaron) Harari, two nephews, Adriel and Joel (Diana) Harari, all of Orange County, CA. I am also survived by my wife's family: Jim Hibbard, Susan Laman, Phyllis Bingham, Margaret (Ted) Yaeger, Robert (Jackie) Hibbard, nephews Matt (Wendy) Bingham, Phil (Morgan) Bingham, niece Heather (Ty) Benson and many other nieces and nephews.
It is a strange sensation to write your own obituary. Good Bye and Good Luck!
A Wake will be held in David's honor, Saturday. Jan. 18th at 7:00 PM at the Cottonwood Country club 1780 E. Lakewood Dr. Holladay, UT. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the MS Society of Utah. For condolences please visit
