Philip Wayne Hallstrom Obituary
"Take a Hike"
Born August 14, 1940 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Alma Wayne and June Llewellyn Hallstrom. The oldest son in a houseful of boys raised in the Avenues. Graduated from East High School Class of '58. Served eight years in the Marine Corps. Married Roberta Detmers August 4, 1961 and celebrated 52 adventure-filled years. A business degree from the University of Utah led to careers in banking, real estate, subdividing and the last 25 years in residential home building. His legacy is in building his home, both daughters' homes, and a cottage for his wife. He contributed much through his service with the Home Builders Association, Salt Lake County and Taylorsville City Planning Commissions and gained lasting friendships.
Over the years he enjoyed sailing, climbing, fishing and hunting. He was well known for taking anyone who asked on hikes through the Wasatch Mountains. His mantra was always "walk slow and drink lots of water". He loved each of his callings in the church, with temple work taking a special place in his heart. He was always giving service to others and in the service of his God.
Survived by his wife, Roberta; daughters Junelle (Darren) Jacobsen and Rhetta (Brett) McIff; 6 grandchildren: Ben, Pete, Joseph, Josh, Marin, and Gabe; brother Richard Hallstrom. Preceded in death by his parents; brothers Stephen and Christopher; and granddaughter Hillary Hope.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 25, 2014, 11:00 a.m. at the Valley Park Ward, 5233 South 3200 West. Viewings will be held Friday, January 24, 2014, 6-8 p.m. at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road and Saturday at the church, 10-10:40 a.m. Interment, Salt Lake City Cemetery.
