Richard Allen Sander Obituary
Richard A. Sander
1935 - 2013
Richard Allen Sander peacefully slipped away from us on Monday, November 25th, 2013 after struggling with the deteriorating effects of Alzheimer's Disease.
He was born November 24, 1935 to Gladys Virginia Livingston and George Ivan Pihl in Glendale, CA. He and his mother moved many times in his early years, living in Montana, Utah, and California. They were finally able to settle for his high school years in La Cañada, CA, where he graduated from John Muir High School. He was especially grateful at that time for his cousins, who were to him like the siblings he wished for (Jean, Keith, Robert, Jack and Nancy Livingston), as well as for his aunt and uncle, who helped provide him with some direction and stability.
He did his undergraduate schooling at UCLA and then attended USC, where he earned a MD and was elected as a member of Salerni Collegium at USC's School of Medicine.
He specialized in anatomical and clinical pathology and was accepted as a member of The American Board of Pathology; later attaining qualifications in Forensic Pathology and completing training in LA County as a Medical Examiner. He practiced in Forensics for many years, in the LA and Lake Tahoe areas, and also in Utah as the State Medical Examiner.
He returned to school at the University of Utah to complete a Master's in Occupational Medicine, which changed his focus for the last several years of his medical practice.
He also served in the Medical Corp. of the U.S. Air Force achieving the rank of Colonel, retiring after more than 35 years of service in the Reserves and Air Guard.
He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and treasured his membership with a deep testimony of the restored Gospel. He loved attending the temple and served in the Jordan River Temple.
He enjoyed hiking, in addition to collecting/cataloging many rocks and mineral samples, and was a member of an amateur geological group for several summers.
He overcame many challenges in his life and was a devoted, loving husband to his wife Chris. He loved his children, step-children, and their many grandchildren. He loved taking them hiking, shooting, swimming, camping, as well as to Lagoon and Disneyland,. He enjoyed taking time to have fun. He loved sports and competed in the Huntsman and other senior competitions winning many medals in swimming and track. He was always trying to "beat his last time". He loved basketball, racquetball and skiing.
He is survived by his wife, Christine Sander; his children: Sharon Sander, Susan Conrad, Stacie Winters (Randy), Sabrina Sander (Paul), Christie Sander, Rick Sander and his step-children: Bryan Burgon (Amanda), Nathan Burgon (Shandy) and Adrianne Schelin (Eric).
