Russel Glen Thorne Obituary
May 24, 1924 - August 1, 2014
Russel Glen Thorne died on August 1, 2014. He was born in Ogden, Utah to Clifford and Anna Thorne on May 24, 1924. He was the youngest of five siblings and is the last of his family; passing away at age 90. He lived all his life in Ogden.
Russ was very proud to have served in World War II. He joined the Army Airborne at age 18 and was a member of the 17th Airborne Division. He was a paratrooper. In 1945 his Unit jumped over the Rhine into Germany where he was wounded, and received a Purple Heart.
Russ was happily married to Lynn John for 64 years. They traveled, golfed, and loved to winter in Oceanside, California where they had many friends.
Ogden School District was lucky to have Russ as an art teacher for 30 years. He taught at Central and Mt. Ogden Jr. High schools. He touched the lives of many students, encouraging them to pursue the arts in their lives. Mr. Thorne was a mentor and friend to many amazing artists today.
Russ was a popular figure in Ogden, there were few people he didn't know by name. You couldn't know him without loving him, and the feeling was reciprocal. He genuinely cared for everyone. If you were lucky, you were on "Russ's Mustard" list. It was always a spicy Christmas treat.
Russ and Lynn had three children: Jeannie (deceased), Tim (Lani) and Nancy. They had two granddaughters: Stephanie and Michelle Stettler, three grandsons: Fred. Bart and Bryce Thorne, Tim and Lani's family: Kelly Beckstrand and Dustin Harrison, and four great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. He was an adoring and proud Grandpa and was deeply loved. Russ was an amazing "Uncle Russ" to numerous nieces and nephews. He followed their lives and was always a phone call away.
Russ was so loved by so many and will be deeply missed. The family would like to thank the staff at St. Joseph's Villa for their loving care of Russ this past year.
There will be a celebration of Russ's life on August 29, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. at Leavitt's Mortuary, 836-36th St., Ogden, Utah. Please come with a smile and a great Russ story to share!
