Sharkey, Siobhan Sophia. Born July 3, 1965, Washington, DC; died December 18, 2012, at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. Siobhan lived in Salt Lake City and Park City for 10 years before moving to Austin, Texas where she was the founding principal of Health Management Strategies, Inc., a healthcare consulting group established in 1996. Siobhan grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, attending Roland Park Country School for 12 years, graduating in 1983. She attended Yale University, receiving a BA degree in 1987, and Wharton School of Business, where she received an MBA in 1991. Throughout her life and to the end of her heroic battle against cancer, Siobhan uplifted us with her vibrancy, optimism, and compassion. Siobhan is survived by her parents, Robert and Phoebe of Washington, D.C., and her siblings, Edward, Catherine and James, sisters-in-law, Jennifer and Ina, nieces, Anne, Elizabeth and Phoebe, and nephews, Frederick and Caleb.
A private Funeral Mass was celebrated at Holy Trinity Church of Georgetown, Washington, DC followed by interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Montgomery County, Maryland. A Memorial Mass will be held at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen in Baltimore, Maryland on January 19th at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution in Siobhan's honor to Roland Park Country School, 5204 Roland Ave., Baltimore, MD 21210.

Dear Sharkey Family, When I see the picture of Siobhan all the memories of her as a child come back. She was a sweet and lovely child to care for. I was only 8 years older than Siobhan when I began babysitting for her family. She enjoyed helping me take care of her younger brother Edward. The day that Catherine was born I was there to take care of Siobhan and Edward. They were so excited about their new baby sister. I will remember her sweet smile. As I read these entries of love I see what an amazing person she came to be.

I don't believe I've ever met a person with the combination of intelligence, humor, compassion, and humility that Siobhan possessed. I noticed early as a classmate of hers at Penn, that the center of our social activities often gravitated around Siobhan although she was not one to seek the attention. Her infectious smile will always hold a place in my memories. I am reminded of The words of Robert Louis Stevenson:

"We are all travelers in the wilderness of this world, and the best we can find in our travels is an honest friend".

I have known Shiobhan through her remarkable work for the past several decades. We worked together to "help change the world" in the National Chronic Care Consortium back in the early 90's. Shiobhan was one of those people for whom those were not just words, she worked to make that happen. I am so very sad, and send thoughts and prayers to her entire family and wide circle of friends. The world is a little darker without her remarkable light.

I remember Siobhan as a visionary. She was not just a dreamer, but someone who made things happen. She had the courage to engage with really big issues (like health care delivery) and experiment and engage with new approaches. She didn't just "discuss and wonder", but actually worked towards making changes. Siobhan always struck me as a person with vision, but she wasn't just a dreamer she made things happen. She was able to engage with big issues (like long established health care practices)and dive in to create change. When other people "discussed and wondered" Siobhan was experimenting and making things happen. I was always in awe of her humble ability to make a difference in the world. Siobhan was such a joy to be around during our two years together at Wharton. There was such a positive energy when in her presence. Though the two years seem brief in retrospect, the memories of her burn very bright. I am so glad I got one last chance to be with her again when she returned for our 20th reunion in order to gain a couple more memories of her smile and laughter.

Speaking for the rest of the Play Group Parents, I can assure you, Phoebe and Bob, that you have all of our sympathy. None of us can imagine anything more difficult nor heartbreaking than losing one of our own children. While most of us are far removed from West 29th Street at this point (though the McElroys are still on Guilford), we all treasure those hours we spent struggling to be good parents to our excellent and superior children, of whom Siobhan was most certainly one.

I was truly saddened to hear of your daughter's passing. Siobhan and were classmates at Roland Park. Although I do not believe I had seen Siobhan since we graduated in 1983, I have nothing but fond memories of her. I had some tough times during my four years at RPCS, but your daughter was ALWAYS a bright light in my world; always uplifting, always compassionate , always encouraging, always blessing others with her infectious smile and laugh.

When I think of Siobhan, I am reminded of the words of Dr. Maya Angelou: "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." Your daughter ALWAYS made me feel like I mattered and I will forever be thankful for the indelible impression Siobhan made on me ~ one that speaks volumes to the sheer joy that was within her.

All of us here at Wharton Health Care Program are deeply saddened at the loss of one of our brightest, most talented, most joyful graduates. I can still hear her hearty laugh ringing in our halls. I am so happy that she came to her 25th reunion at Wharton last May. She said she wanted to be more in touch and to stay closer. I did not know that would be the last time--she was trying to tell me? Since we were 5/6 years old, through building snow forts, back-yard football games, spy club, biking (no hands!), making Christmas ornaments and Halloween costumes, roller skating in the alley, teaching me to make Baklava, visiting each other at college, finally getting together again in DC... My deepest sympathies to the whole Sharkey family. Siobhan has always been a shining light whose love of life and enthusiasm for everything made all things seem possible. I remember so vividly how she convinced me, the day after we met in the fall of freshman year, to stay seated next to her in the more advanced computer science class we were in and not switch to the intro course down the hall. She then proceeded to hold my hand all semester - our Sunday night all-nighter's were a weekly ritual full of some pretty creative computer programming and lots and lots of laughter. Staying in that seat was the beginning of a friendship I will always treasure. She will most certainly live on in my memory and in the memory of all those who have been touched by her generosity of spirit. I will miss her immensely.
