Stan passed away peacefully November 16, 2013 in San Diego, California with his three sons by his bedside. He now joins his beloved wife Lorraine (Laurie) in Heaven, who passed away in March 2013. Stan enjoyed walleye and trout fishing, deer hunting, camping and traveling internationally. He is survived by his three loving sons, Douglas (Becky), Jeffrey (Kathy), and Steven, his three grandsons, Gregory, Brogan and Christopher, his two sisters Doris and Donna, and six nieces and nephews. His brother Earland preceded him in death.
Stan was born on October 7, 1926 in Minneapolis, MN, the third of four children of John Folke and Amy Nelson Heden. He grew up in the small northern Wisconsin town of Ogema. He attended Prentice High School where he played varsity basketball and graduated first in his class. After attending the
University of Minnesota
, he served in the
ROTC and was commissioned as an Ensign in the U. S. Navy. He entered and later graduated from the
University of Illinois
in 1948, earning a B.S. in Chemical Engineering with highest honors. He met his future wife, Laurie Stencel at the University, and they were married in Chicago, IL in 1949.
Stan began his engineering career in Chicago. The company relocated him to Tucson, AZ. He started a branch office for them in Sydney, Australia. He later was relocated to Richmond, VA in 1970 before moving to Salt Lake City in 1973. Stan received his Professional Engineering (P.E.) license while working as an Environmental Engineer. In June 2013 he relocated to San Diego to be near his son, Jeff. Stan enjoyed telling his wonderful stories to his many friends and neighbors wherever he lived.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Zion Lutheran Church in Salt Lake City, UT on December 7, 2013 at 11 a.m. A lunch reception will follow at the church. Remembrances may be made to the First Lutheran Church in Ogema, WI, or to the Zion Lutheran Church, Salt lake City, UT.
