Terrence Barry
1930 ~ 2012
Our dear and beloved husband and father passed away on May 1, 2012, surrounded by his family.
Terry was born on August 29, 1930, in Toledo, Ohio, and was the second child to Ronald and Alice (Rice) Barry. He loved sports growing up and he turned down basketball scholarship offers to attend Harvard University, where he received his BA degree in 1952. After his graduation, Terry decided to serve his country by joining the Air Force, where he became an F-86 fighter pilot and rose to the rank of Lieutenant. His days as a fighter pilot became a great source of incredible stories. Following his tenure in the Air Force, he became an airline pilot for TWA. But Terry felt something was missing in his life, so he decided to study medicine so he could improve the lives of others. He graduated from medical school at Cornell University. Medicine also led to the love of his life when he met a beautiful registered nurse, Matrina Evanoff, and they married on December 19, 1964. Terry and Matrina later had four children: Patricia, Michael, Gregory, and Catherine. They raised their family in south Florida where Terry practiced as an orthopedic surgeon. He later opened his own practice as an arthroscopic knee surgeon.
A key moment occurred in Terry's life when he and his family became members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1975. They were sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple in 1976. Terry dedicated his life to serving the Lord, and he served in numerous Church callings in south Florida including bishop, counselor in a stake presidency, stake president, and patriarch. A highlight of his Church service occurred when he and Matrina were called to serve as mission presidents in the Australia Sydney North Mission. Terry remained steadfast in the gospel throughout his life. He was a home teacher extraordinaire, and he loved attending the Orlando Temple.
In addition to his accomplishments in medicine and in the Church, Terry excelled as a husband and father. He always expressed his love to Matrina, even while conducting meetings or bearing his testimony, and he taught his children to honor her. Terry always referred to Matrina as "The Eternal." He instilled the values of hard work and integrity in his children. And he spent countless hours attending his children's school and sports activities, teaching his kids how to sail, fish, shoot free throws, and have proper manners. He always demonstrated love, appreciation, and concern for people of all walks of life, regardless of race, religion, or culture.
Terry was also a modern-day Renaissance man; he enjoyed classical music, sailing, literature, learning foreign languages, politics, architecture, and cheering for the Miami Heat and Miami Hurricanes.
Families are forever!
Terry is survived by his wife, Matrina, older brother Patrick, his four children, Patricia (Blake) Johnson, Michael (Andrea), Gregory (Renee), and Catherine (Scott) Barlow, 17 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A viewing will be held on Friday, May 4, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and services will begin at noon in the Highland Utah South Stake Center at 9626 N. 6800 W., Highland, UT 84003.
