Obituary Condolences

David John Schafer, born July 21, 1943 in Philadelphia, quietly passed away on December 16, 2013 in San Antonio, TX at the age of 70. He is survived by Carolyn, his very best friend and wife of 49 years, his beloved daughters Kathy Stechschulte and Suzanne Brooks, sons-in-law Steven and Casey, and his beautiful grandchildren Sara, Mickey, Stephie, Beckah and Johnny. In addition, his sister Barbara and husband Erv Aldinger, brothers-in-law Terry, James and Fred Ousey, and his nieces and nephews survive him.
Dave, a Phi Mu Delta, graduated from Penn State University with a BS degree in Business. During that time, he met and married his wonderful wife, Carolyn. After earning a MBA degree at the University of Delaware, he joined IBM as a Systems Engineer and began his career in data processing and banking. His work took him all over the country and abroad, and he was proud to have implemented installation of the first IBM ATM in the U.S. He felt lucky to have lived in Princeton, NJ, Hawaii, the San Francisco area and Sydney, Australia during his years with IBM.
Later Dave became Vice President of Technical Services and Information Systems for World Savings and Loan Association in San Antonio and happily lived in Fair Oaks Ranch. His retirement from the business world allowed him to enjoy traveling with his family and friends and to play golf. His lifelong love of the game began in his teens as a caddie and player. Other special interests were growing bonsai and orchids, pencil sketching and biking. Dave was a clever, witty, loyal and loving man, and he will be missed.
In place of flowers, please consider donating to Wounded Warriors or the Assistance League of San Antonio.
Friends are invited to a visitation reception on Saturday, December 21, 2013 from 4 to 6 pm at Fair Oaks Ranch Country Club. Private services will be held by the family.
