Donald McGregor Jacobs
Massachusetts resident, Donald Jacobs, descendant of Mayflower passenger, Elder William Brewster, has been a resident of Bexar County for four decades.
He graduated from the Holderness School in Plymouth, New Hampshire and was accepted at Yale University before military service intervened. Donald ultimately followed family precedent and matriculated at Colby College in Waterville, Maine.
A brief foray (with friends) into making custom designed yachts in Yokahama was financially catastrophic, but the experience was the adventure of a lifetime. He was Metropolitan Boston Director of the American Cancer Society and was the first Development Director of Santa Rosa Children's Hospital Foundation. After 25 years at Santa Rosa, he became in 1995, the Publisher of South Texas the Newsletter ( a magazine on news print).
He was a genial gentleman incapable of surliness and a joy to all who spent time with him. His wife of 43 ½ years, Bonnie Sue Dilworth Jacobs shall be lost without him.
Affiliations include: The Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities, the Order of the Alamo, the Argyle Club, San Antonio Country Club and the Downtown Rotary Club. As past director of the Conopus Club, a particular goal of Donald's was to become strong enough to return to his Conopus Club lunch group (after battling six sites of cancer).
Because he would not be able to be present at the event, his wife does not want a funeral. Inurnment of ashes will be in Gonzales, Texas in November and in Pepperell, Massachusetts next summer. Honorary pallbearers would have been: Walter Nolte Armstrong, George Whitney of Milton Massachusetts, Robert Yeates Wheeler, Charles O. Kilpatrick, William Moser, Dr. Carlos Menendez, Blackstone Dilworth, James Gorman, Bob Buchanan, William Chumney, Rick Foster, James McNeel Keller, Joan Negley Kelleher, Sister Rosita Hyland, John Ferguson, Harry Swearingen, Walter Scott Light, Reginald Beavan III, Val Alexander, Mitch Specter, William F. Dean; Frederick Hanau, Robert Cadwallader, Sgt. Peter Rosie, Judson Wood and Mitchell Specter; as well as nephews, Robert and Donald Jacobs, Daniel Eddy, Curtis Ham, Henry Griffin, Terry Flannery and John Jacobs Holden.
Donald was preceded in death by sisters, Peggy Jacobs Holden and Helen Jacobs Eddy. He is survived by Thressa, Jean and Robert Jacobs; nieces, Antonia, Maria, Annie and Maggie Holden, Meredith Eddy, Elizabeth Eddy Griffin, Janet Eddy Ham; and by legions of great nieces and nephews.
Donald's final illness was ameliorated by his optimism and courage; and by Doctor's Carlos Menendez, Amita Patniak and Mark Rittenhouse and by nurses Donna Torres, Sarah Hepp, Sandi Esparza and Bertha Redd.
He was a supporter of Christus Santa Rosa, Laity Lodge, the Holderness School and South Texas Accelerated Research Therapy.
