Dorothy Holland Obituary
Dorothy Burr Holland was born on Sep. 10, 1915, and went to be with the Lord on January 25, 2013. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Owen Holland, Jr. and her great-grandchild Audrey Ruth Kirk. She is survived by her children Bryan and Carolyn Holland; Cynthia and Roy Riewe, Karen and Charles Perry, and Sarah and Pat Holden; 8 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.
Dorothy lived in Bronson, Texas during her childhood, and graduated with a B.A. from Rice University and a M. A. from Cornell University. She met her husband at the University of Texas at Austin where she was taking courses for her teaching certificate. Before they married in 1940, she taught history for two years, but she shifted to serving as a Sunday School teacher at First Methodist Church in Jacksonville, Texas during her long career as mother and homemaker. After her children were grown, she taught history at Lon Morris College until she retired early in order to travel with her husband. They loved camping in the National Parks throughout the Rocky Mountains. The last thirty years of her life they lived in San Antonio where she continued to enjoy gardening and playing with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dorothy was a faithful servant of the Lord Jesus Christ, and we are comforted that she now rests in the presence of God.
A funeral service will be held at University United Methodist Church at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 2, 2013. Interment will follow a reception at the church at Mission Burial Park North. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to University United Methodist Church. You may sign the on-line guestbook at www.missionparks.com under the obituary section.
