BURGES
Ellis G. Burges, age 91, died peacefully September 15, 2013. He was born in Beaumont, TX to the late Ellis Gray Burges, M.D. and Sarah Wells Burges, teacher of the deaf. Ellis married Mary Margaret Morris on February 26, 1944 in San Antonio. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, John G. Morris. Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Mary Margaret Morris Burges of Castroville; daughter, Bettie Lee (Kevin) Wilson of San Antonio; son, Bill (Mary Lou) Burges, O.D. of Castroville; grandchildren, Robb Jefferson Wilson, Erin (Rev. Mark) Bunch, Maj. Jefferson David (Emily) Burges, USA, Christina Mamie Burges, Joanna Marie (Ryan) Linton, Rebecca (John) Weikel, Matthew (Ruth) Chestnut; great grandchildren, Thomas Ellis Bunch, Elizabeth Mamie Bunch, Kaitlyn Ray Burges, David Ellis Burges, Caleb Matthew Weikel and many wonderful nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and long-time loving care giver Jennifer Diaz "The General." Ellis loved having family around and took great pride to have two great-grandsons carry his name. He and best friend from childhood days, Bill Low, received their Eagle Scout awards together. Grandsons Robb and Jeff honored him by also making Eagle Scout. He was very active in the Medina County community and for 20 years served as leader and announcer for the Alsatian Dancers of Texas. He was a past president of Castro Colonies Heritage Association (CCHA). He was a wordsmith and served CCHA for many years as newsletter editor. Ellis was also the newsletter editor for a number of years for the Texas Artist Blacksmiths Association. In the 1950's Ellis served as Medina County chairman of the Texas Legislative Hale Akin Committee. As a member of the greatest generation, he served in the Navy during WWII and then thoroughly enjoyed his career as an electrical engineer for the USAF Security Service for 27 years. Special thanks to the staff of Methodist Hospital CICU for their exceptional compassionate care to Ellis and his family, and to Dr. Robert Schnitzler M.D. for decades of excellent care. Visitation will be on Monday, Sept. 23, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Tondre-Guinn Funeral Home in Castroville. Funeral Service will be at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013 at Tondre-Guinn Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. Mark Bunch. Interment will follow at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. with military honors. Pallbearers will be Robb Wilson, Jeff Burges, John William Morris, Vincent Biediger, Davy Moore and Carl Jackson.
