CHAVANA
Ernest M. Chavana, age 78, of New Berlin, Texas passed away on March 25, 2013. He was born on September 20, 1934 in San Antonio, Texas to John P. and Marie Antoinette Chavana. Ernest lived most of his life in San Antonio with the exception of his tour of duty in the US Navy on the USS McCain as a radar man and in civilian life employed with Pitney-Bowes for 35 years, some 20 years of that time as manager in Corpus Christi, Texas and Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Ernest earned numerous awards at Pitney-Bowes. After Retiring from Pitney-Bowes, Ernest became a licensed realtor, utilizing his talent in negotiation. He enjoyed making things agreeable for all parties involved. Ernest was Golden Gloves Champion, an Eagle Scout, graduated from Central Catholic High School, attended San Antonio College and was a member of Tau Delta Fraternity. Ernest was a lifelong member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church and an associate member of Christ Lutheran of Elm Creek often serving on the usher corps, on the church councils and as the Thrivent coordinator. Ernest's greatest joy for recreation was hunting and fishing, but he also took the family on long road trips many times. He was an expert working with leather, designing and custom tooling gorgeous purses, wallets, personalized belts, etc. He was an excellent cook and loved music, having played the violin in elementary school and the glockenspiel in the high school marching band. Ernest was a true humanitarian. He was compassionate to everyone's needs, equally proud of the achievements of each individual son, their wives', children, his siblings, and parents. Ernest was very proud of his heritage and lived a true Christian life, witnessing by example; kind, gentle, loving every aspect of nature and always putting God first. Ernest was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Thomas; sister, Cynthia; and granddaughter, Alison. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Betty Joyce; sons, David A. Barker III and wife Griselda, Aaron G. Barker Sr. and wife Theresa, Danny A. Barker and wife Tomie Ellen, John A. Chavana and wife Laura, E.Matt Chavana Jr. and wife Loretta; seventeen grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters; two brothers; one brother-in-law; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, ministers, and many loving friends including Linda Barker, Jim Winn and the care givers at Nesbitt Living & Recovery Center.
