BATHA
Erwin Francis Batha, age 80, of Boerne passed away at home on December 18, 2013 at 5:50 pm after suffering a long illness of Lou Gehrig's Disease (ALS). He was surrounded by his family and friends. Erwin was born in St. Louis, Missouri to Joseph and Ethel Batha on December 9, 1933. This union produced three sons, Eugene Batha (Laverne) Erwin Batha (Sylvia) and David Batha (Judy). Erwin had just celebrated his 80th birthday at a grand reception honoring Erwin's life and accomplishments with his wife, six children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
After leaving home to serve in the Army during the Korean War, he continued his service with the Army as Pharmacist at Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio. After his Army duties, he developed a long friendship and brotherly love with Martin Rubin (Marty) of San Antonio. Together they owned and operated Royal Pharmacy of Castle Hills and three other locations in San Antonio serving four generations of devoted customers. It was at Royal Pharmacy where the world famous Dr. Smith's Diaper Ointment was developed by Erwin Batha. Erwin first made the product for Dr. Forrest Smith of San Antonio and a partnership of four men was soon formed.
Before leaving St. Louis for his military duty in San Antonio, he married his sweetheart of 25 years, Wanda Elizabeth Scharnell Batha. Their children were Donna Batha Conrad (Rocky), Mike Batha (April) and John Batha, all of San Antonio. On July 11, 1980 Erwin married Sylvia Amend Niles and lovingly added three more children to his family, Denise Niles Canales (Rob), Darrin Niles (Brandii) and Deena Niles Bridges ( Mark). Erwin and Sylvia were married for 33 years and lived in Boerne, Tx. since 1986.
The family will dearly miss their husband, dad, pop, papa, grandpa, uncle, cousin, brother, and brother-in-law. Erwin loved his large family of six children, many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
The family also extends their sincere thanks to the ICU St. Lukes Hospital and Season's Hospice & Palliative Care.
Funeral services will be held at Erwin's beloved church, St. John Lutheran, 315 East Rosewood, Boerne, on Saturday, December 21, 2013. Viewing will start at the church at 11:00 am. The Funeral Service at the church will follow at 11:45 a.m. Following the Service will be the Committal at the Boerne Cemetery. Fellowship and refreshments will be at the church after the committal service.
The family suggests that Memorials be sent to: St. John Lutheran Church Benevolence Fund.
