Eve Marie McElroy died peacefully at home in San Antonio, Texas on January 16, 2013 at the age of 94.
Born Eva Marie Simolin in Sault Ste. Marie, Canada on November 22, 1918, she was the daughter of Finnish immigrants.
Eve graduated from Eveleth High School in Eveleth, Minnesota and was an accomplished cheerleader, ice skater, and skier in her youth. In 1942, she graduated from the School of Nursing at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. That same year, Eve met her future husband, John McElroy, who was completing U.S. Naval officer training school at Northwestern University and would command PT 161 in the South Pacific. Eve's effort to enlist as a nurse during WWII was thwarted with the loss of her birth certificate in a records' fire in Canada. In the early 1960's, she worked at the Nix Memorial Hospital in San Antonio.
Eve and John were married on April 18, 1944. Her husband remained in active service for eight years in Albuquerque, San Francisco, San Diego, and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba before settling in San Antonio for the remainder of their lives.
She is survived by her four children, Karen Evans of Dallas, Patricia Klinzing and John McElroy, Jr. of San Antonio, and Susan Golemon of Manchester, CT. In addition, she leaves six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Eve was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, John E. McElroy.
Always a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, as well as a wonderful role model, she will be forever sorely missed by her family.
Visitation will be at 9:30 am, followed by an 11:30 am service on January 25, 2013 at Covenant Presbyterian Church with Pastor Dan Milford officiating. Interment at Ft.
