Fernando Ramirez peacefully entered Eternal Rest on February 8, 2014. He was 77 years young. Fernando was a life-long Texan, reader, traveler and Dallas Cowboys fan. The child of migrant workers, he often relayed stories of his family's journeys to various states harvesting fruits, vegetables or cotton, describing the smell of the earth, the taste of the fruit and the community of workers with smiling eloquence and a nod to the appreciation of hard work it created. He served with the U.S. Marine Corp and later graduated from the University of Texas. With his wife, the late Margaret Lozano Ramirez, at his side, he began a decades-long career with the Office of Personnel Management. The journey took him to various U.S. cities and created lasting friendships with those he considered brothers and sisters. His love of literature, books and words led to the completion of three books of short stories in his retirement. He greatly enjoyed giving readings or discussing the craft of writing. With his constant companion and love, Maria Elena Coker, he traveled the U.S. and many places in Europe. At home, he loved to garden, listen to Big Band music and bake beer bread to share with family and friends. If the Dallas Cowboys were playing football, he was watching that game-and praying for a winning season, and maybe a new coach. The family wishes to thank the staffs of Metropolitan Methodist Hospital and Vitas Hospice. Celebrating his life are: wife, Maria Elena Coker, daughter Marisa Ramirez Cannon, son-in-law John, grandson Alex, and son Arturo Ramirez, daughter-in-law Angela and their four children. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 11, 2014, at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
