Forrest Louis "Tag" Freitag Obituary
Forrest Louis "Tag" Freitag passed away on Saturday, February 22, 2014 at the age of 91. He was born to Rosena and Harry Freitag at the family farmhouse in New Haven, Missouri on November 21, 1922. Forrest graduated as the valedictorian of his class at New Haven High School and attended Central College in Fayette, Missouri on a basketball scholarship. He also attended the University of Missouri before leaving school to work on survey crews in Oklahoma, Kansas and Indiana. He then went to work in Chicago for Arthur Andersen, and was transferred to work for a client, Tennessee Gas Transmission (TGT). Arthur Andersen agreed to return him to TGT if he finished his education. Forrest went to the University of Texas at Austin, where he became a member of Pi Kappa Alpha and graduated with a BBA. He earned his CPA designation in 1950. He worked for TGT, later known as Tenneco Inc., in Houston until his retirement as Director of Internal Audit after thirty years of service. During that time he traveled to South America, Europe and across the United States while looking after the oil, gas, manufacturing and real estate interests of Tenneco Inc. He attended Stanford University's Executive Development Program and was a member of Financial Executives International, Texas Society of CPAs and Rotary Club.
He married Kathryn Jane McCray in 1951. After living in Houston for the first half of their 60-year marriage, Jane and Tag moved to their beloved Grape Creek Ranch outside Austin, Texas for twelve years. There, they raised Longhorn cattle and entertained family and friends. They moved to San Antonio in 1992. He was a loving caregiver for Jane after her Alzheimer's diagnosis until her death in 2011. Tag was kind, generous, funny, a loyal Texas Longhorns fan and an avid golfer, playing into his eighties. He was a member of Alamo Heights United Methodist Church. Forrest Louis Freitag was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Jane. He is survived by his son, Lou Freitag; daughter, Jan Barnes and husband Doug; four grandchildren, Kathryn Barnes Daniel and husband Rob, Henson Barnes and wife Katie, Tiffany Freitag Vogelman and husband Chris, Forrest Freitag III and wife Stephanie; four great-grandchildren, Ava and Nash Freitag, Landry and Aubree Vogelman; brother, Wayne Freitag and wife Audy; sister, Joyce Brown; nieces, Kay Goodrich, Karen Jensen, Sarah Humphrey, Chris Rodgers, Rebecca Wiley, Kathleen McCray; nephews, Mark Brown, Jeff Freitag, David Freitag, John Freitag, and their families.
