ALVARES
Dr. Frederick L. Alvares, 78, passed away on November 20, 2013 at the Mesa Vista Inn in San Antonio after a long illness. Born in the Portuguese colony of Goa in India, he was the son of Bernard Pinto and Palmira (Alvares) Pinto. He took the surname Alvares upon his immigration the United States in 1962. Dr. Alvares received his B.A. from St. Xavier's College in 1957, and then went on to earn both his Masters and Ph.D. from the University of North Dakota in 1966 and 1973 respectively. In 1988 he joined the faculty of St. Mary's University in San Antonio as an Assistant Professor of Chemistry. He received tenure in June 1995 and was promoted to full Professor in June 2002. He was responsible for the development of the undergraduate Biochemistry program which resulted in a significant increase in student majors, and developed and taught courses in Biochemistry over the past 25 years. He served as the University Radiation Safety Officer for many years and also served on the Pre-medical/Pre-dental Advisory Committee. He solely developed several advanced courses in Biochemistry. He served as the University Radiation Safety Officer for many years and was a continuing member of the Premedical/Predental Advisory Committee. He was involved in Biochemistry research and collaborated for many years with the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio. He is survived by a sister Maureen (Pinto) Fernandez of London, England; and a brother Oscar Pinto of Bombay, India; two nieces and two nephews. He was supported and lovingly cared for by his faithful friends Craig and Lillian Smith, Jim and Karen Hawkins, and Mike and Amy Losiewicz while living in San Antonio and throughout his final years. Services will be held at Assumption Chapel on the St. Mary's University campus. Viewing hours will be at 3:00 P.M. on Sunday December 1, 2013 followed by a rosary at 7:00 P.M. A funeral mass will be held on Monday December 2, 2013 at 10:00 A.M. followed by a reception at the University Center. In lieu of flowers, one can make a donation honoring Dr. Fred L. Alvares to the Dean's Fund - School of Science, Engineering & Technology.
