Gilbert Joel Saenz, age 60, went to be with our Lord peacefully in his sleep on Monday, December 9, 2013. He attended Burbank High School, where he played the saxophone as a member of the high school band. While still a teenager he traveled to and lived in Detroit, Michigan where he worked for the Pontiac Division of General Motors. After deciding to return to San Antonio, he was employed as a Clinical Technician at The School of Aerospace Medicine at Brooks AFB. His job included working with our nation's early astronauts in space flight training. It was there that he developed his interest in the veterinary field while also working with test animals including dogs, cats and the great apes (chimpanzees, orangutans and gorillas). Gilbert studied veterinary science at San Antonio College, St. Philips College and was awarded a sponsorship to Texas A&M University-Kingsville. He supervised the health and care of dairy cattle at various farms in Oklahoma and the training of riding horses at a local recreational dude ranch. Several times throughout his life he was self employed as a professional residential and commercial painter. He also lived for a time with friends in Los Angeles, California. His later years were dedicated to caring for his elderly parents. He took great care in his personal appearance and fitness, people believed him to be much younger than he actually was. Gilbert participated in organized sports such as baseball, racquetball, tennis, golf and was an expert pool player. One of his hobbies was restoring the muscle cars that he owned throughout his life. He enjoyed watching sports on TV, classic movies and of course watching the Animal Planet. Gilbert's most important delight was spending time with his new grandson, Zeth, whom he loved very much. To say the least, Gilbert had an adventurous spirit and deep faith in God, we will miss him very much. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Josephine Saenz. Gilbert is survived by his son, Gilbert Fabian Saenz; grandson, Zeth and brother, Reuben David Saenz and his beloved pit-bull, Tiger. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 17, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Porter Loring on McCullough Ave.
