Dunham, John Spofford

The Reverend John Spofford Dunham was born in San Antonio, Texas on November 15, 1924, and died peacefully at home, February 28, 2014. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School. He then joined the Air Force, serving in WWII, flying C-47's in Europe. After the war, he returned to Austin and graduated from the University of Texas with a BBA in 1950. He married Maurine Highsmith and they had a son, John and a daughter, Ann.

John and Maurine lived in San Antonio until he was called back into the service and served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He was also was assigned to Okinawa and Ethiopia.

John received a Bronze Star Medal among others for his service and then retired from the Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1968, after which he attended the Seminary of the Southwest in Austin. He was ordained December 1, 1971, by Rev. Stanley Houser. His service as an Episcopal priest took him to Raymondville as Vicar of Epiphany from 1971 to 1973, then to two churches at the same time, Rector of St. Phillip's in Beeville, and Church of the Good Shepherd in George West from 1973 - 1983. He then moved to Llano, to Grace Church from 1983-1995.

Several years after Maurine passed away, John found love again and married Susan Bransford in 2001 in San Antonio. They have enjoyed traveling, entertaining friends, and spending time with their dogs, Cody and Zeke. They have lived on Lake LBJ together since their marriage and have adored their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. They have attended St. Luke's-Cypress Mill Episcopal Church for more than 15 years.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Katherine Dunham of San Antonio, TX; his brother Walter Dunham of Corpus Christi, TX; his first wife, Maurine Highsmith of Junction, TX; his son, John Spofford Dunham, Jr. of Houston, TX, and his daughter, Ann Ragland Pond of Austin, TX.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Susan Dunham; granddaughters, Allicen Cano and her husband Paul; Elizabeth Cromartie and her husband Philip; great grandchildren, Ethan John Montemayor, Isabelle Rose Cano, Kade Philip Cromartie and Kole Dunham Cromartie; daughter-in-law, Susie Ganch and her husband Allan; son-in-law, Dale Pond; nephews, Walt Dunham, Rick Dunham and Roy Kindrick; and Susan's children, Jackson and Marilyn Doege, Paul and Diane Doege, Lisa and Mike Mahoney, and their children and grandchildren.

The family would like to give special thanks to the team from Hill Country Memorial Hospice, private caregiver Susan Johnson, and Dr. Pamela Cantu for their compassionate care in John's final days.

A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, 1:00 PM, March 4, 2014 at St. Luke's-Cypress Mill Church, 263 Spur 962, Cypress Mill, TX 78663.
