Mr. John Gerard Holterman, age 91, died October 29, 2013 in Greenville, S.C. He was a resident of San Antonio for 80 years. He moved to Greenville in 2012 to live with his daughter Kathleen. Mr. Holterman was a 5th generation Texan dating back to his pioneering ancestors who came here from Germany in the 1800's. They settled at the present site of Comfort Texas, the heart of the hill country. His grandfather was the first child born in the fledgling settlement. John was also a member of St. Johns United Methodist Church, a 50 year and endowed member of Harlandale Lodge #1213 A.F. and A.M., San Antonio Scottish Rite Bodies of the Orient of Texas 32, a 50 year endowed member of Alzafar Shrine Temple, Charter member and Emeritus Member and Past Chief of Shrine Circus Roustabouts Club. He was Chief of the Electrical Department of the Shrine Circus for over twenty five years, designing and building the electrical equipment used during this period of time. John was also a member of Anton Wenzel Lodge, Order of the Sons of Hermann, Life Member of Post #7108 Veterans of Foreign Wars, member of the American Legion, and a member of the Old Trail Drivers Association of Texas. He served as a Master Sergeant with the U.S. Signal Corps attached to the U.S. Army Air Corps. He served in The CBI Theater of operations and was stationed in Calcutta, India during World War II. A Federal employee for 34 years, John retired in 1975 and was a member of the Kelly Field Retirees Club, and a member of the National Association of retired Federal Employees. He was an Electronic Equipment Repair Section Chief who received numerous awards and certificates of recognition including four Sustained Superior Performance Awards. During the early days of World War II, John was one of the first civilians to attend the U.S. Army Signal Corps Air Borne Radar School held at the Bell Laboratory in New York, N.Y. He is survived by his daughter and son in law Dr. and Mrs. David Cull, grandson John David Cull, grandson Thomas Michael Cull and granddaughter Emily Anne Cull, numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Mildred (Millie) Braswell Holterman and his only son John G. Holterman III. Visitation will be at 9am on Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at St. John's United Methodist Church, 2002 Bandera Rd, San Antonio, TX 78228 with a funeral service to follow at 10 am with Rev. Alex Alvarez officiating. Entombment to follow at Sunset Memorial Park with full military honors and Masonic services under the auspices of Harlandale Lodge #1213 A.F. and A.M.
