Julian Walker Freeman, age 96, passed away on March 24, 2014 in San Antonio, Texas. Walker was born in Charleston, South Carolina on May 4, 1917 to David Ramsey Freeman and Emily Julia Freeman. He joined the United States Air Force during World War II and proceeded to have an illustrious military career in which he logged 11,000 flight hours, receiving two Distinguished Flying Crosses and three Air Medals earned for his efforts in flying "The Hump" as well as the Berlin Air Lift. After he retired in the 1960's, he started his own business as a custom home builder. He is best remembered by his lively and vivacious personality that served him well throughout his life. He truly believed that conversation was a dying art form, and he tried every day to "keep it alive". He had a deep love for family and sought to pass onto his sons - and later, his grandchildren - both a set of deeply held religious beliefs as well as a strong sense of duty to God, country and his family. He would advise his grandchildren at family dinners, trying to impress upon them "the power of compound interest". He taught his sons many things, and to this day they are extremely knowledgeable in everything from homebuilding to mechanical car repair. He was an avid outdoorsman, and his sons can all remember hunting and scuba diving with him as well as going out on the lake to water ski. He espoused the virtues of daily healthy living, snow skiing into his 80's, and at 94 was still going to the gym three times a week. He is survived by his wife, Hazel Freeman and his three sons, Gary and his wife, Karen, Robert, Douglas and his wife, Kathey. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Lisa Davis and her husband, Lance, Adam Freeman and his wife, Kristen, Thomas Freeman, Ann Marie Reigrut and her husband, Travis, Stephen Freeman and his wife, Amanda, and Joshua and Elizabeth Freeman. He was also blessed with six great-grandchildren, Aubrey Davis, Emily Davis, Katy Davis, Seth Freeman, Addison Reigrut, and Ava Freeman as well as friends and family too numerous to count. Visitation will take place from 6:00-9:00 p.m. Sunday, March 30, 2014 at Sunset Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. Monday, March 31, 2014 at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Joan Ahrens and Rev. H. Ray Davis officiating. Entombment will military honors will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. Condolences may be offered at http://www.sunsetfuneralhomesa.com/.
