Maria G. Cervantes, daughter of Patricio and Nemecia Gonzales, was born May 21, 1926 in Ceralvo, Mexico, and entered into the Kingdom of Heaven on February 3, 2014 at the age of 87. She is survived by daughters Patricia Martinez and husband Hector; Hilda Thornton and husband Steve, and Brenda Leal and husband James. Sons include Fernando C. Cervantes, Robert Cervantes and wife Debbie, and George Cervantes. Her four grandchildren are Jeffrey Martinez, Keith Cervantes, Nikki Thornton and Camryn Leal. Raised in Mexico and earning a college degree, she was a school teacher for several years. After marrying Fernando P. Cervantes in 1949, she relocated to San Antonio, Texas to start a family. Her children were her life mission. She was a devoted and loving mother whose wit, charm and wisdom together with her soft touch instilled in her children and grandchildren a desire and drive to pursue their dreams through education. All followed the example that she had set. She was a gentle and warm matriarch whose legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of us all. Friends as well were touched by her as she was generous and giving of both her time and assistance. Additionally, she was a longtime volunteer of her church. Her memory will live on forever as will our love for her. Special thanks go to the staff and residents of Sonterra Health Center as well as Mrs. Irma Zapata for the care and support they provided mom. Visitation will be open to family and friends on Wednesday, February 12, 2014 from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at Porter Loring Mortuary North Chapel located at 2012 North Loop 1604 East. A funeral procession immediately after will proceed to Graveside Services.
