Nell Louise Fenner was born in Houston on July 3, 1924 to Zou and James Fenner. She grew up in Edna, Texas on the family farm with brothers Jim and Edwin. After graduating from The University of Texas with a Bachelor's Degree in Journalism, she embarked on a 45 year career as both a writer and an editor.
Nell and her first husband, Daniel Grover, also a writer, lived in Acopilco, Mexico for 11 years, doing freelance writing for many Texas newspapers. When they returned to San Antonio in 1969, she took a job at the San Antonio Express News, and retired in 1990 as the Food Copy Editor.
After retirement, and the death of her first husband, she married Bill Healey, and devoted herself to gardening as well as traveling and enjoying friends. She was very active in the historic River Road neighborhood, where she served as the communication point of contact for many years. A life-long democrat, she and husband Bill had many lively political discussions, as he was a devoted Republican. There was never a winner in their debates, but both sides were better for the experience!
Nell gathered friends wherever she went, and was known to everyone as a loving, witty, warm and accepting person who treated all people with dignity and kindness. She passed away July 25, 2013 in her home, with a view of her beautiful garden, surrounded by family, friends and her beloved cats.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Edwin, and husbands Daniel Grover and Bill Healey. She is survived by her brother The Reverend James Fenner of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Niece Margue Fenner, nephews Mark Fenner and Steven Fenner, of Sioux Falls, and nephew Dr. Jim Fenner of Las Vegas, Nevada, as well as numerous great nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.
A celebration of her life will be held this Saturday, July 27th at 1:00pm at her home at 834 E. Magnolia Ave. All friends and acquaintances are welcome. Burial will be at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery with a private service at a later date.
